Top 10 Pokemon whose types dont make sense

Ok so with the release of Pokemon Sun and Moon we had the introduction of something called Alolan forms, these are versions of classic pokemon, but with new and different typing's (and also appearances, though thats not relevant to this blog.) And I have to be honest, its pretty cool and pretty realistic as well (think of the different types as being similar to different species of say dog, or even something much more generalized like how Orangutans from either of the two islands they inhabit look different from each other).

Now personally I'm kinda hoping this trend continues, and if it does hopefully the next round includes these guys....because as it stands none of these pokemon's typings have ever really made sense. (Also note, unless specified, assume these entries apply to all pre/final evolution of the pokemon with the same typing)

Gyarados

Seriously why is this thing flying type? it has no wings, nothing that looks like wings, and have NEVER been seen flying at all in any of the games, or [as far as I know] the anime.  Oh and in an ironic twist, it does get wings when it mega evolves....and loses the flying type. WTF?

Near as I can tell it was made flying to give it a quad weakness to balance out its insane power in Gen 1, and they couldnt do dragon cause even with the quad ice weakness that would have made it even more OP...thats honestly the only thing I can think of.

So yea, lets hope at some point in the future, this thing gets the variant it deserves, as a pure water type, or a water/dragon as the thing appears to be based on .

Volbeat/Illumise

Ok, so these things are based on Lightening Bugs, or Fireflys.....and yet they are pure bug types.

WTF? Seriously the real world common name has an actual pokemon type in the name (fire) and another common name strongly implies another type (electric)

Yet somehow neither of those types wound up in this pokemon....and that would seem lazy normally, but given there are two of these and they were designed as a pair....its doubly lazy.

Not to mention, how cool would it have been in Generation III to have Bug/Fire or Bug/Electric types, and not have to wait until Gen 5?

Heck even now I think these things would be pretty cool as Bug/Fire (which still is a type only held by one pokemon) or even Bug/Electric (even if they would be overshadowed by the others of this type)

Aggron

Why is this thing part rock type? Its a steel tank mixed with a dinosaur or something. But wheres the rock? Yes I get the other dino based pokemon are rock types....but they are also fossils, this one isnt extinct. So why is an armored tank rock type? To set it apart from Mawile (a pure steel type in Gen III)?

Basically this thing eats iron, and has a suit of iron.....never a mention at all about rocks.

At least they got it right with the mega evolution and made it pure steel. Hopefully any future variant can follow suit....though the existence of a mega evolution makes me doubt a regional form will ever come for this thing.

Lugia

The Diving Pokemon. Lives underwater (in the anime) and in a massive cave in the ocean (in the games).

Pokedex entry from Gold: It is said that it quietly spends its time deep at the bottom of the sea because its powers are too strong.

and Silver: It is said to be the guardian of the seas. It is rumored to have been seen on the night of a storm.

May also be based on the real world Shinto god of the sea.

So clearly this thing is part water type right?

NOPE. For reasons that have never been explained, this thing is Flying/Psychic, not flying water.

The only possible reason for this might be because its "rival" Ho-Oh is Flying/Fire and they didnt want to give it a type advantage (cause that might affect sales)...or didnt want to introduce two legendary water types in the same generation (Suicune). Now I know a legendary isnt getting a regional form EVER....but would a retcon be too much to ask? make this thing Water/Flying

Gligar

So this one is called the "Fly Scorpion" And seems to be based on a bat mixed with a scorpion. Also most of its pokedex entries mention its poisonous tail, and even more mention that is flys or glides to its prey

Yet this thing is Flying/Ground. Um WHAT?

Seriously where does ground typing fit in? How is this thing not the perfect example of a flying posion type?

Oh wait...thats right, its a purple bodies pokemon with blue wings.......and we had one of those introduced in Generation II along with Gligar.

So I guess it had to take Ground typing in defiance of logic so it wouldnt look like Gamefreak accidentally created pretty much the same pokemon twice.

Emboar

Yep, thats right....Gamefreak can totally mess up on a starter.
And believe it or not, I'm not actually picking on Emboar simply because he was the 3rd straight fire/fighting type and therefore completely unoriginal.  Even in a vacuum Emboars typing doesnt really make sense.

So Blaziken was based on cock fighting and the Basan, a fire breathing chicken from Japanese myths...so fire/fighting makes sense there.  Infernape meanwhile was based on Sun Wukong, AKA the Monkey King, a warrior priest from Chinese Mythology....so again the fire/fighting kinda makes sense (even if the only connection to the fire part is the name sun) Emboar meanwhile actually comes from the same myth as Infernape, except he is based on a demon pig.

Now given the links between Demons and fire in western teachings at least, the fire part works.....but Demons also suggest evil, or bad or Dark......

So yea why wasnt this thing Fire/Dark? based on its lore that would have made so much more sense.

Not to mention, breaking the Fire/Fighting streak at two, and preventing the backlash that followed by making Emboar Fire/dark might well have completely prevented our next entry

Incinaroar

Thats right....7 generations in and Gamefreak is still making somewhat inexplicable typing choices.

So Incinaroar is based on a tiger and wrestler....which might seem like a weird combination, unless you are familiar with Tiger Mask, which was a Japanese Manga staring a tiger mask wearing wrestler named Tiger Mask, that later went on to spawn an anime and real actual Tiger Mask being created for Japanese Wrestling (portrayed by multiple wrestlers over the last 40 years)

Now I hope by now you can see where I'm going with this....based on its origin, Incinaroar should totally be a fighting type.

Now I have to be fair to gamefreak, Incinaroar is the "Heel Pokemon" and Heel is the wrestling term for bad guy, and Tiger Mask does have an evil twin named Black Tiger.....so there is some reason to make it Dark type, but getting there involved ignoring the much more logical stop off at fighting type.

Now of course lets be honest, if Gamefreak had introduced yet another fire/fighting type, there would have been a massive backlash, such is the corner they painted themselves into when Emboar was fire/fighting (and not fire/dark), so from a real world perspective I get why they did it....but it still logically doesnt make sense

And actually come to think of it, there is nothing in Incinaroar's orign that gives it any real reason to be a fire type, other than the fact its preevolutions are "fire cat pokemon" but with out a real world source or inspiration to back that up, and of course the fact the starters MUST have a fire type option.

It's possible the best thing Gamefreak could have done would have been to make this entire line Dark from the beginning, then make Incinaroar dark/fighting (which fits its inspiration perfectly) and come up with a totally different pokemon line to be the fire starter this generation,

Florges.

Look at the picture of this thing, its a flower. So clearly this thing is a grass type right?

And every single one of its Gen 6 Pokedex entries refers to it being used to create gardens. So its a grass type right?

8 of the 14 moves it naturally learns are grass type....so its a grass type right?

Its the garden pokemon, and its ability is Flower Veil so its a grass type right?

Nope. its a fairy type...and its a pure fairy type too.

Seriously what the fuck gamefreak, you make a pokemon that is actually a flower, and you DONT make it partly grass type?  why the hell not?

Seriously, I dont even have a possible explanation for this one, seeing as how Cottonee, which became grass/fairy in Gen 6, isnt even available in the X/Y games where this thing debuted. So you cant even claim somehow you were trying not to make redundant types or ideas.

As far as I know, this pokemon is not yet available in Generation 7.....but when it does become so (or Generation 8 or whenever it returns) maybe claim the version seen in Gen 6 was its "Kalos Form" and that the more widely available form in all other regions is Fairy/Grass, just saying.

Golduck

So, Golduck's preevolution is Pysduck...a Pyschic Duck Pokemon. Gold also happens to be a color assoicated with Psychic types, the Japanese name of Sabrina's badge is the Gold Badge.  In the mystery Dungon seies, Gold Gummis are the ones prefered by Psychic Pokemon. The 2 pure non legendary Psychics in Gen 1, Hypno and Alakazam are Gold/Yellow Colored. The Shiny forms of Slowbro and Exeggutor (2 other part Psychic types from that generation) are also Gold.

What I'm getting at, is basically like its Preevolution, this thing is another way of saying "psychic duck"....and yet its not psychic. Cause reasons.

Also worth noting, Golduck is one of 3 pokemon (along with Magneton, Golbat and the respective preevolutions) to appear in EVERY SINGLE region (thanks to black 2 and white 2), including Alola.

Just saying, if any pokemon could have used an Alolan form to correct its weird and non sensical typing....there is literally one 1 I can think of more in need of that than Golduck (and its our last entry)

Butterfree

Hands up if you thought this thing was Psychic at least at one point in your life? The number of comments I have seen on the internet from otherwise knowledgeable sources claiming butterfree can be your teams Psychic type in Kanto is insane.

Now I totally understand the source of the confusion. Immediately after evolving into this form Butterfree learns confusion in pretty much every generation, and it also learns psybeam naturally later on, and it can learn Psychic, Rest, Skill Swap and Dream Eater in the generations they are available.

Meanwhile the only flying move (its true typing along with Bug type) it could learn naturally until generation 4 was Gust, and Aerial Ace via TM from gen 3 on (though as a special attacker it has no use for Aerial Ace), and it wasnt until Gen 7 this thing picked up another natural and damaging flying move.

But yea....still for some reason this thing is flying type. And you cant say its because it has wings, because the same is true for its "counterpart" Beedrill and that thing has NEVER been flying type.

Now Beedrill got a mega evolution in Generation 6, so I figured Butterfree was top of the list for an Alolan form in Generation 7....especially since, unlike Beedrill its available in that game. And I figured it was a near lock that its Alolan form would be Bug/Psychic like its always supposed to have been in my opinion.

But then that didnt happen, which is made all the more disappointing seeing as how Butterfree was arguably the first pokemon EVER to have regional differences in the Anime.

Remember way way way back when Ash caught a butterfree back in season 1? You remember its last appearance (and if you grew up watching the show in the 90's you definitely do), ash's butterfree was released so it could go mate with this Butterfree:

And this is before shiny pokemon existed in the game....and for the record Butterfree's shiny form isnt pink. Also in the Orange Islands series, the Butterfree on those Islands were also shown to have regional differences in their wing markings, so we know of at least 3 types of Butterfree

Oh yea, and one last thing, going back to that pink butterfree....it left with Ash's Butterfree to fly back to its home "across the ocean".

By the way, in the Gen 7 games, Alola was settled by people from across the ocean in Johto and Kanto.

So yea...guess where Ash's butterfree was going? evidence suggests Alola.

And yet no fucking Alolan form, despite the fact that form was created 20 god damn years ago. (yes I get they would have to do a bit more to tweak it now rather than just make it pink, but still a pink butterfree with different wing patterns, and say a size difference, and boom, done Alolan form made)

Seriously, Ash-Greninja made it into Sun and Moon from the Anime and this didnt? You have got to be kidding me.......this is just fucking lazy.

So yea, there you have it folks, 10 pokemon who's typing's have never made sense....and at least 3 of whom (the last 3) damn well deserve a regional form to fix the error.  (and 3 more due to being starters and legendaries who will never be fixed)
